thanks to Aaron Drake for providing this mix

genome reader is community participation project. In April of 2006 I put out a call for recordings of peoples' voices speaking the letters A,C,G and T in any language. I then wrote a piece of software that reads the human genetic sequence using the voices of the contributers. A recording of the output of the software is currently touring the US and Europe with Aaron Drake's Radio Transmission Orchestra.

One interesting aspect of the project was figuring how to store the large amount of information needed to represent the human genome. I finally decided on a two bit system with A being represented by 00, C by 01, G by 10 and T by 11. Each byte of the file comprises four DNA bases. In addition to the genome reader software I wrote a command line C progam to convert from a ASCII text representation of the sequence to the two bit format and vise versa.
