On May 6th, 2006 I had the priviledge of working with Stephanie Aston, Mayra Gallo, April Guthrie, Harmony Jiroudek, Marja Liisa Kay and Kris Wildman on the follow-up performance to their North American premiere of Georges Aperghis' Sextuor : L'origine des especes. This chamber opera is scored for five vocalists and cello, who also has a significant speaking role. The text of the piece comes from Charles Darwin's Origin of Species, Stephen Jay Gould's Wonderful Life and nonsense French syllables. This an extremely technical and demanding piece which the performers interpret and execute brilliantly.
Our performance was at the Skye Gallery in Idyllwid, CA and we'd like to thank them for their help and hospitality.I created video and lighting for the performance based on genetic algorithms and abstracted images inspired by the text. I used a combination of Processing, Max/MSP and GEM software to realize the visuals. Some of which you can see below.
