145 N. Raymond Ave.
Pasadena, CA 91103Written for the Guthrie & Streb Summer Solstice call for works, standing still a 66,486.7 miles per hour is a piece for cello, viola and tape loop. It plays with ideas of concentricity and cyclic and relative motions. The two performers sit in the center of a revolving loop of 1/4" magnetic tape. As the two instruments cycle through overtone series' on each of their strings they are recorded onto the tape loop. The loop continues to layer the music on top of itself throughout the piece. At the same time the rotational speed of the tape is continuously reduced causing all previously recorded music to descend in pitch.
